Calwell Federal MP Maria Vamvakinou said today that the announcement by South Pacific Tyres that it intends to close its Somerton plant by the end of the year is a significant loss to local manufacturing in Calwell.
"My immediate concern is for the welfare of the plant’s 587 employees and their families who are affected by this decision.
This week, the Rudd Government outlined its financial support package for the 156 staff working at the Bridgewater Aged Care facility in Roxburgh Park.
"The On Track data for VCE graduates in 2007 raises two important issues," Ms Vamvakinou said.
"The data shows that local schools are achieving a reasonably high level of success when it comes to our Year 12 students gaining entry into either University or TAFE/VET courses, though there is always room for improvement," Ms Vamvakinou said.
