Super Clinic for Calwell

People in Melbourne’s north can look forward to a GP Super Clinic for Hume city under a Gillard Labor Government.

To be constructed in Hume City, the GP Super Clinic will take pressure off existing health services, offer after-hour GP services and provide training for future health professionals.

The Hume GP Super Clinic is being funded because of the strong financial management of the economy by the Gillard Labor Government.  GP Super Clinics provide an excellent setting to help train the more than 3,000 nurses and 1,300 GPs who will come on line as a result of the Government’s investment in health.

Hume City is a growing community with a high number of young families. By 2013 Hume city is expected to reach a population of 177,289, an increase of 10,000 since 2006 and exceed 240,450 by 2030.  Hume is also classified as a low socio-economic community.

The Gillard Labor Government is planning for this growth by locating a GP Super Clinic in the region to offer services for the growing needs of this local community.

The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon said that the Gillard Labor Government is determined to take us forward in health by providing better services for communities in need.

“Tony Abbott would take us backwards on health and has announced that if elected he will scrap funding for GP Super Clinics, which means people in Hume will miss out on the services this clinic will provide.

“Mr Abbott’s decision to slash funding for GP Super Clinics and more than 400 existing practices also means that many Victorian communities will be denied the opportunity for better GP services,” said Minister Roxon.

Member for Calwell Maria Vamvakinou said this funding would be warmly welcomed by her community which was in need of more doctors and additional after-hour GP services.

“My community will not take kindly to having these services scrapped under a Liberal Government and today. I call on the Liberal candidate for Calwell to get behind a GP Super Clinic for Hume,” said Ms Vamvakinou.

The Gillard Labor Government will provide up to $7 million for a Hume GP Super Clinic through our National health and Hospital reforms.

A competitive process will be conducted by the Department of Health and Ageing to establish the successful operator of the Hume GP Super Clinic.
