Harmony Day

Harmony DayA rainbow of cultures celebrated the benefits of diversity and intercultural dialogue at a Harmony Day luncheon hosted by Calwell MP Maria Vamvakinou on March 22. Indigenous community elder and Wandara Founding member Aunty Gloria Davis, along with speakers from the Chaldean and Greek communities addressed the gathering of more than 50 people at Broadmeadows Uniting Care Centre on Camp Road.

 

Aboriginal Employment Strategy (AES) Vic/Tas state manager Nicole Bloomfield spoke about the support she received from the indigenous community during her times of crisis and also discussed what AES programs were available.

 Business development officer Dahnielle Fox from the Broadmeadows Spectrum Education and Training Agency gave a brief overview of the services available for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. Ms Vamvakinou said: ''The luncheon aimed to bring people of different cultures together to encourage communication and understanding in the Calwell electorate.

“This year's Harmony Day theme ‘Express Yourself’ provided an opportunity for everyone to share in the importance of cultural diversity.’’

The spirit of the event was summed up by vice president of the President of the Greek –Australian Recreational and Instructive League Northern Federation of Ethnic Seniors Citizen Thekla Scarella.

“We may speak a different language, believe in different religions, cook diverse foods and continue to practice our culture, but it is the future generations that will carry on our heritage. We must teach them to live together and live in love and harmony.’
