Future of Automotive Industry Strengthened

Automotive IndustryFederal MP for Calwell, Maria Vamvakinou, today welcomed the passage through Federal Parliament of a key component of the government’s $6.2 billion New Car Plan for A Greener Future.

“This legislation marks an important day in the history of the Australian automotive industry, and is great news for the hundreds of local people who work in the industry,” Ms Vamvakinou said.

The legislation establishes the $3.4 billion Automotive Transformation Scheme (ATS) – which will stimulate investment and innovation in the Australian automotive industry, and support the development of new and greener technologies, including cars with improved fuel efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Also included is a $10.5 million expansion for the LPG vehicle scheme, to start immediately. This will double payments to purchasers of new private-use vehicles that are factory fitted with LPG technology.

“In the last two years, we have suffered many job losses in the car component industry. Local people know that the economic downturn has hit the major car manufacturers hard in Europe and the United States – they are worried about their livelihoods and their future,” Ms Vamvakinou said.

“The car industry not only provides vital employment for Australians, it is a driver of manufacturing innovation across many other industries as well. And having a local car industry that is strong and confident enough to innovate is essential for Australia to be at the forefront of adapting to our pressing environmental needs.

“I can say with pride that this government is doing everything we can to protect, support, and develop our automotive industry, and manufacturing capacity generally.”
