Local volunteer grants now available

Federal volunteer grants are now available for local organisations in Calwell. Grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 are available for eligible not-for-profit community organisations.

These grants can be used for purchasing equipment, contributing to transport costs, as well as providing training for volunteers or covering the cost of screening checks.

Expressions of interest must be submitted by 14 February 2020.

Unfortunately, the Morrison Government has placed a limit of $66,000 on volunteer grant funding per electorate. This is despite 70 per cent of organisations missing out in previous rounds, despite worthy applications.

Labor is concerned about the adequacy of current funding levels and has asked the Government to review the program to make sure it meets the needs of our local community.

“Volunteers and volunteer organisations are the heart and soul of our communities,” said Maria Vamvakinou MP.

“This is a great opportunity for local community organisations to access grants of up to $5,000 to support local volunteers and their terrific work.

“Unfortunately, the level of funding in previous rounds has fallen short of community need, and Labor has asked the Government to review this as a matter of urgency.”

Grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 are available to eligible not-for-profit community organisations. This funding can be used to:

  • Purchase eligible small equipment items for use by volunteers
  • Contribute to volunteers’ fuel costs
  • Contribute to transport costs for volunteers with disability who are unable to drive
  • Assist with the costs of training courses for volunteers
  • Undertake background screening checks for volunteers.

Grants are available to organisations where at least 40 per cent of staff are volunteers, and can be used for activities that:

  • Help community organisations to support the efforts of Australia’s volunteers
  • Help community organisations to support the inclusion of vulnerable people through volunteering
  • Encourage, support and increase participation in volunteering
