Local community organisations in Calwell are among 4,800 across Australia to benefit from the Gillard Government’s $16 million Volunteer Grants program. Across Calwell, 21 organisations will share in $82,567.78 to support the work of their volunteers.  Federal Member for Calwell, Maria Vamvakinou said the Government’s investment was delivering much-needed support to local volunteers.
 “We know that volunteers give their time, energy and expertise to support our community. 
“The Volunteer Grants will support a range of local groups. These groups include the African Australian Welfare Council, Arthritis Foundation of Victoria, Australian Denizli Associatio, Avustralya Turk Kultur Genclik ve Egitim Cemiyeti, Broadmeadows Greek Women’s Club, Calder Cannons Football Club, El Qubed. Greek and Cypriot Social/Welfare Centre, Greek Australian Recreational and Instructive League of Victoria, Hume City Masters Swimming Club, Karate Instructors Association, Meadows Community Garden, Northern Turkish Women’s Association, North Point Church, Probus Club of Sunbury, St John Ambulance-Hume Division, St Mary Magdalene Anglican Church, Sunbury Family History Society, Sunbury Returned and Services League, Te Kakano O Te Ao Seeds of the World and 3rd Sunbury Scout Group.
 
“They will receive a grant of between $1000 and $5000 to contribute to their volunteers’ fuel costs and purchase much-needed equipment such as kitchen utensils, furniture, computers, cameras, photocopiers and training courses.  
“Grants will also help with the transport costs of volunteers with disability who are unable to drive and need to use public transport or taxis as part of their volunteering role.“Volunteers continue to make a significant social and economic contribution to Australian society, contributing approximately $14.6 billion to the not-for-profit sector each year.“Across the country, more than 166,000 volunteers will benefit from the Volunteer Grants.“The Government is committed to supporting our army of volunteers and this year’s volunteer grants will help them to undertake their selfless work in supporting local communities.”
