Maria Vamvakinou MP

Your Federal Member for Calwell

Maria Vamvakinou MP, the Federal Member for Calwell yesterday joined with the Hume Council to oppose the Governments proposal to build an immigration detention centre in Broadmeadows and has signed a joint letter to the Minister opposing the proposal.

Tomorrow Ms Vamvakinou will speak in the House of Representatives on this issue, highlighting that:

“One hundred and twenty million dollars is a lot of money to be spending to build a unwanted and unnecessary detention centre. The Government should be spending that money to build more aged care beds, to fund more childcare place, or to reinstate the Commonwealth dental scheme.”

“Its good to see the community joining together to fight this proposal and I will take the community's message from yesterdays forum to Canberra tomorrow.” said Ms Vamvakinou.

“The Camp Road site for the proposed centre could be put to better use. Imagine the jobs and economic activity that could be generated locally if the site was used for industrial purposes.”

“The Federal Government’s failure to consult the community over the selection of the site for the Detention Centre proposal is disappointing and again highlights the out of touch arrogance of the Howard Government.”
