"Like many in the local community, I am disappointed by the EPA's decision to grant a works approval to BIS Cleanaway to establish an oily leachate handling facility at the Tullamarine Cleanaway Waste Dump" Maria Vamvakinou stated today.
"Many in the local community have been actively lobbying the EPA to permanently close the Tullamarine Waste Dump by refusing to renew its operating licence when it next expires. This was in fact promised to the local community by the EPA. The EPA has put itself in an unwinnable situation, directly pitting itself against the wishes of the very people it is there to protect.
I think the local community will take this latest set back as but one more reason to double their efforts to have the Tullamarine tip permanently closed. I think their concerns are real, and their frustration is certainly palpable.
I have no doubt that the community campaign to have the tip closed will continue to grow, especially in light of this recent decision."
