I begin by associating myself with the contributions made by many of my colleagues on the passing of Gough Whitlam. I offer my
Following the Federal Election in 2013, the new electoral boundaries of the federal seat of Calwell came into effect. The suburbs of Sydenham, Taylors Lakes Keilor, Keilor North, Keilor Downs, Keilor Lodge, Keilor Village and Calder Park join Attwood, Broadmeadows, Campbellfield, Coolaroo, parts of Craigieburn, Dallas, Gladstone Park, Greenvale, Jacana, Meadow Heights, Melbourne Airport, Roxburgh Park, Somerton and Westmeadows to form the boundaries of the new seat of Calwell. This is the second redistribution to affect the boundaries of the seat of Calwell in the time that I have been the Member. I will be relocating my electorate office, currently at the Broadmeadows Railway Station, to the Keilor Shopping Centre on November 10, 2014.The decision to relocate the electorate office from its long standing location was not an easy one to make. I had to consider, however, what would be the best way of servicing all of the constituents of Calwell. It is my intention to remain accessible to all, and together with my office staff, I will be running mobile offices and making appointments to see constituents in the City of Hume area.
The new office details are: Office of Maria Vamvakinou MP

Federal Labor Members for Calwell and Wills Maria Vamvakinou and Kelvin Thomson, have today expressed serious apprehensions about the latest unemployment figures for their electorates. The latest Department of Employment report ,Small Area Labour Market Figures for Wills and Calwell are extremely concerning. In Calwell a real catastrophe is unfolding. In the City of Hume, unemployment has increased since June 2013 from 6.9% to 10% in June 2014. In Broadmeadows unemployment has risen since the change of government from 21.9% to be 26.4%. Unemployment in Campbellfield and Coolaroo has risen from 18.8% to be 22.9%, and unemployment in Meadow Heights has risen from 18.6% to also be 22.9%. These are terrible figures. They are a recipe for social disadvantage on a massive scale, with the certainty of crime, drugs, and mental health problems to follow. The figures also show that unemployment in Melbourne’s inner north is now higher in some cases than the unemployment crisis facing Europe.
It is a privilege to be able to rise and speak today on the motion put forward by the member for Gellibrand. The member and I share a border; the western border of Calwell. The member for Gellibrand is fortunate enough to have a large number of Vietnamese-Australians living in his electorate of Gellibrand, and I can indeed boast that, of the 220,000 Australians who speak Vietnamese at home today, I have about 1,200 living in the federal seat of Calwell. I have on occasions in this place spoken about them. I would like to take this opportunity to mark the 40th anniversary of the Vietnamese community's presence in Australia.
