Ms VAMVAKINOU (Calwell) (10:43): On Monday 25 April, CSL Behring celebrated 100 years of operations. I was very fortunate to attend a commemorative tour of the CSL Behring's facility in my electorate of Calwell, and later a formal dinner to celebrate the CSL's centenary on 14 April.
CSL originally was known as the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories. It was established in 1916 by the Australian government as a small branch of the quarantine department. The impetus for establishing CSL was to ensure that Australia, as an isolated nation, had reliable access to life-saving biological products during times of war.
It was great to visit two community-based groups. First, the Ottoman Village Aged Care premise. A non-profit organisation providing quality residential and respite care service for the aged and disabled, managed by community members and part of the Broadmeadows Turkish Islamic Society Inc. Thank you to Asuman Kacar (Facility Manager) and Ms Semra for the tour.
It was great to visit Catholic Regional College Sydenham to view the Trade Skills Centre and address a group of Year 11 and 12 students. A special thanks to Mr Leo McInery, Deputy Principal and the school captains for taking me on a tour of the Trade Skills Centre. I was very impressed by the high quality of the facilities and the exciting learning environment which has been created under the leadership of your Principal, Mr Brendan Watson OAM. I wish all the school’s VCE and VCAL students the best for the rest of the year and look forward to hearing about your future successes. The future of our electorate is in good hands.
