I represent an electorate in which large numbers of people, even if they are fortunate to have jobs, are really struggling to make ends meet. My Calwell constituents need their penalty rates more than ever to pay for their utilities, put food on the table and pay for transport costs like petrol or train fares.
I support this Bill because protecting the take home pay of 700,000 low paid workers is in our national interest. It is in our national interest to address the growing rate of inequality in our country.
We cannot ignore the historic low wage growth; we cannot ignore unemployment; and we cannot ignore underemployment.
