My speech in parliament on the Adult Migrant English Program - 22 May, 2017

All new migrants to a country want to hit the ground running from the moment they get here and being able to communicate is central to being able to do that. That's why I spoke in parliament about the Adult Migrant English Program which gives new migrants and refugees to Australia a chance to do just that.

The importance of speaking English for a new migrant can never be underestimated as it impacts on their capacity to get a job and to negotiate every day activities that many English speakers take for granted such answering the telephone, filling in forms, using public transport, being able to communicate with doctors, the police, enrolling their children in schools and speaking with teachers, shop assistants and in general understanding and communicating with the broader community.
