Federal Member for Calwell Maria Vamvakinou MP, welcomed a funding boost from the Gillard Labor Government that will help the local community better manage Australia’s natural and productive environment.
The Merri Creek Management Committee received about $320,000.00 funding as part of the Government’s $2 billion Caring for our Country program.
“I welcome the investment and congratulate our successful recipient in Calwell,” Ms Vamvakinou said.
The funding will be used to ensure the grassland ecological values in the Merri Valley North of Melbourne are maintained. The project aims to conduct key improvement works at five sites spanning 24 kilometres within the projected Merri Creek Habitat.
“The Caring for our Country program is an important initiative that supports volunteers and community groups who make such an important contribution to our natural environment,” Ms Vamvakinou said.
“The projects selected under the program will help reduce the impact of invasive species, protect coastal environments and critical aquatic habitats, increase sustainable land management practices and protect native habitats and World Heritage Areas.”
