Ford Australia today celebrated two unique milestones – 85 years of Ford production and innovation in Australia and 50 years of the Ford Falcon.
Speaking at the event, Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr said that the innovative Falcon is the longest-running Australian-made brand.
“The upcoming release of a 50th anniversary model shows the continuing strength and adaptability of the Ford range of motor vehicles,” Senator Carr said.
“Australia has a proud history in automotive manufacturing and the Australian Government is working with manufacturers like Ford to ensure that continues.
“The automotive industry has weathered the storm of the global recession and iconic brands like the Ford Falcon will continue to be part of our landscape for years to come.
“This is a fantastic achievement and I congratulate Ford Australia.”
Senator Carr said that the Australian Government, through A New Car Plan for a Greener Future, is helping to transform the automotive industry.
“The industry is already responding positively to the challenge by producing cleaner, greener and more fuel-efficient vehicles,” Senator Carr said.
“For example, Ford is investing $230 million to develop new greener engines for the Falcon and Territory models. With $42 million in assistance from the Green Car Innovation Fund, Ford will fit the EcoBoost engine to the Falcon next year.”
The Member for Calwell, Maria Vamvakinou, said she was happy to be part of the milestone celebrations.
“The Ford Falcon is an icon in the electorate of Calwell, as is the Ford factory,” Ms Vamvakinou said.
“The Ford factory is a major employer in the community, and one of the central pillars of Australian manufacturing. I look forward to many more years of Ford production in Calwell.”
