Your Federal Member for Calwell

“The changes that the Howard Government is making to the Parenting Payment (Single) won’t move single parents into work and will be only moving people from welfare to welfare, not welfare to work.” said Ms Vamvakinou

“The Government’s welfare initiatives, instead of helping people to work, punish children and take food off the table of some of Australia’s most vulnerable families. This week, over four thousand single parents’ in the Calwell electorate have been left wondering how they will make end’s meet after these changes are introduced.” said Ms Vamvakinou

“At the heart of the Howard Government’s changes to welfare is a cut of up to $77 per fortnight to many low income single parent families dependent on welfare. The sixth birthday present for a child in these families could be a cut of nearly $40 a week to the family income.” said Ms Vamvakinou

“The changes announced to the Disability Support Pension work test, which force those who are able to work for fifteen hours per week off benefits, will mean that the most vulnerable members of our community will be left without the support they will need to get by.” said Ms Vamvakinou

“The stripping of benefits from disabled people is an insensitive and cruel act from this Government.” said Ms Vamvakinou

"Since this announcement, my office has been inundated with phone calls from concerned DSP recipients, who are worried that their benefits will be taken away. It’s a sad day in this country when the Treasurer has to balance a budget by taking the meagre benefits away from some of the most disadvantaged people in our community." said Ms Vamvakinou
