In relation to Dr. Chris Towie and concerns over local health care, Maria Vamvakinou MP stated today:

"I have had the opportunity to speak with Dr Chris Towie, as well as several other local doctors regarding some of the challenges that this area continues to face when it comes to health care and service provision."

"Like many in the community, I share Dr. Towie's concerns about the availability of general practitioners and specialists in this region, as well as access to psychiatric services. We need more affordable health care, and we need more local doctors."

"I have to say that I am surprised to hear that Broadmeadows is no longer listed as an "area of need," meaning that it is now harder to get new doctors into the area. One issue that has been brought to my attention is that of 'provider numbers'. A doctor needs a provider number before being allowed to work in Broadmeadows, whilst the amount of doctor provider numbers registered in Broadmeadows determines whether this area is one of need or not."

"The question of provider numbers and whether they are being allocated adequately is a matter that I have already started to pursue."

"I am pleased to know that in my area, doctors like Chris Towie exist, who have a strong social conscience and a will to see the community better serviced by health care facilities."

"I look forward to working with Dr Towie, and with other doctors, in addressing some of these issues."
