In response to concerns over a licence renewal for Tullamarine Cleanaway Waste Dump, Maria Vamvakinou MP stated today:

“I completely understand community fears regarding the safety of the Tullamarine Cleanaway Waste dump. Put simply, the Tullamarine Cleanaway Waste dump must close, and I am strongly against any effort to have the tip’s licence renewed.”

“If the EPA were serious about protecting both the environment and local residents, it will do just that.”

“Comments made by the Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu that “People moved where the landfill is” when recently asked about the tip’s effect on local residents, show just how dismissive Mr Baillieu is of the local community and its very real and legitimate concerns about the tip’s safety.”

“They also show just how profoundly divorced Mr. Baillieu is from the local community, and how little he really knows about this issue. On a number of occasions, local residents were promised that the tip’s licence would not be renewed once its expiry had been reached. The fact that these promises are again in danger of being reneged is completely unacceptable.”

“I call on the state government to intervene in this matter, one that has effectively seen the community hoodwinked each time the tip’s licence is close to expiry. Tullamarine and its local residents have shouldered their fair share when it comes to waste management, and it is time for this tip to close, once and for all.”
