Maria Vamvakinou MP supports the community campaign to have Tullamarine Cleanaway Waste Dump closed.

Maria Vamvakinou attended last nights public meeting of the Terminate Tulla Toxic Dump Action Group last night, held in Gladstone Park. Maria Vamvakinou has been a long time supporter of community calls to have the Tullamarine Tip closed given the potential health risks and dangers it poses to the local community.

"Last night was yet another example of the hard work and dedication of the Terminate Tulla Toxic Dump Action Group. The organizing committee who are driving the Action Group need to be commended for their ongoing efforts to both inform the local community about the potential dangers of the Tullamarine Waste Dump, and to also rally the local community to get behind their calls for the Waste Dump to be closed" Maria Vamvakinou said.

"This is an important issue, one that affects residents across a number of different suburbs in Hume, and I urge members of the local community to throw their weight behind this campaign. Put simply, the more support Terminate Tulla Toxic Dump Action Group get, the greater their chances of success are in having the Cleanaway Waste Dump closed in Tullamarine." "There are a number of different ways that members of the local community in Hume can get involved in supporting the Terminate Tulla Toxic Dump Action Group, from taking out membership, to helping distribute information flyers to the local community, through to joining the organizing committee. This is a local community issue that residents of Hume are getting behind in ever greater numbers, and it has my full and ongoing support."

"Having the Tullamarine Waste Dump closed is something that I, and many other residents of Hume want to see happen, and want to see happen now. Judging from the support that Terminate Tulla Toxic Dump Action Group continue to generate, this is not a campaign that will disappear any time soon." "This Friday, the EPA hand down their decision over whether they will again renew the Tullamarine Tips licence, or whether they will come good on promises they made to local residents that the Tips licence would not be renewed. This is one of the most important days to date in the campaign to have the Tullamarine Tip closed."

"I completely understand community fears regarding the safety of the Tullamarine Cleanaway Waste dump. Put simply, the Tullamarine Cleanaway Waste dump must close, and I am strongly against any effort to have the tip's licence renewed." "If the EPA were serious about protecting both the environment and local residents, it will do just that."

"On a number of occasions, local residents were promised that the tip's licence would not be renewed once its expiry had been reached. The fact that these promises are again in danger of being reneged is completely unacceptable." "I call on the state government to intervene in this matter, one that has effectively seen the community hoodwinked each time the tip's licence is close to expiry. Tullamarine and its local residents have shouldered their fair share when it comes to waste management, and it is time for this tip to close, once and for all."
